There are all kinds of over-the-counter remedies to help you quit smoking. Go into any drugstore and you’ll find a wide array of expensive gum, patches and even fake cigarettes to help you kick the habit. But now it appears there is a simple and natural remedy that can help you kick the nicotine addiction – eating more fruits and vegetables.

According to a new study, smokers who had fruits and vegetables four or more times per day were three times more likely to be free of tobacco after 14 months when compared to those who only ate fruits and vegetables twice per day on average.

This study involved 1,000 smokers all aged 25 and up. The participants filled out surveys about their tobacco usage and the amount of fruits and vegetables they consumed. Even when factors such as age, household income, ethnicity and sex were included, the results were consistent.
One reason for the success when more fruits and vegetables are consumed is that certain beverages and foods can make cigarettes taste worse. Some of those items include milk, dairy products, vegetables and fruits. On the flip side, things like red meat, alcohol and coffee make cigarette flavor more appealing.

Once again an increase in fruits and vegetables offers an incredible health benefit. You really can’t go wrong with adding more whole fruits and vegetables into your diet. Not only can it help you quit smoking, but eating more colorful, whole foods has been linked to cutting cancer risk, aiding in weight loss, and lowering the risk of weight related diseases like diabetes and heart disease.
This smoking study is just one more reason to increase the amount of fruits and vegetables in your diet. Even if you aren’t a smoker, making these changes can only benefit your health.
